Storyline
In the 2005 sci-fi thriller War of the Worlds, Tom Cruise stars as Ray Ferrier, a divorced, blue-collar crane operator living in New Jersey who struggles to connect with his estranged children, Rachel and Robbie. His parenting skills are put to the ultimate test when an ordinary storm gives way to a terrifying alien invasion, as giant, three-legged war machines—"Tripods"—emerge from beneath the earth and begin vaporizing humanity. Ray must navigate the sudden collapse of society and the brutal instincts of panicked crowds to protect his children, embarking on a desperate cross-country journey to Boston in a frantic bid for survival.

Editor's Note
Biggest Strength Steven Spielberg’s direction creates a masterclass in tension and terror, staging the invasion from a grounded, boots-on-the-ground perspective that makes the scale of the destruction feel chillingly realistic and intimate. Biggest Weakness The film's third act loses some narrative steam, culminating in a notoriously abrupt resolution that relies on a convenient biological twist and an overly neat family reunion that undercuts the bleak realism built up by the first two acts.
