Storyline

In the 1993 coming-of-age sports comedy The Sandlot, a fifth-grader named Scotty Smalls moves to a new neighborhood in the summer of 1962. Awkward, uncoordinated, and completely clueless about baseball, Smalls desperately wants to fit in. He is taken under the wing of Benny Rodriguez, the charismatic leader of a local neighborhood team that plays every day at a nearby sandlot. Smalls is quickly accepted into the tight-knit group of quirky kids, embarking on a magical summer of treehouse sleepovers, pool excursions, and endless baseball games. However, their carefree days hit a massive snag when Smalls borrows his stepfather’s autographed Babe Ruth baseball for a game—and accidentally hits it over the outfield fence into the domain of "The Beast," a giant, legendary English Mastiff rumored to eat children and anything else that enters its territory.

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength The film captures a deeply comforting, golden-hued sense of mid-century childhood nostalgia, anchored by an authentic, deeply charming chemistry among the young cast that makes their friendship feel genuinely timeless. Biggest Weakness The final act leans heavily into cartoonish, logic-defying absurdity during the boys' elaborate contraptions and Benny's supersonic footrace to retrieve the ball from the neighborhood dog, shifting the movie away from its grounded reality.
