Storyline

In the 2002 sports drama The Rookie, Dennis Quaid stars as Jim Morris, a high school chemistry teacher and baseball coach living a quiet life in Big Lake, Texas. Twelve years after a severe shoulder injury permanently derailed his dreams of making it to the Major Leagues, Jim spends his days raising his three kids and coaching a struggling, unmotivated high school team. When his players notice that his pitching arm has mysteriously gained unprecedented power, they make a deal with him: if they win the district championship, Jim must promise to attend an open tryout for the Majors. Against all odds, the team delivers on their end of the bargain, forcing the 35-year-old family man to step up to the mound, where he shocks scouts by throwing a blistering 98 mph fastball and earning a legendary second chance at "The Show."

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength The film excels in understated, authentic storytelling, opting for a quiet, grounded tone that captures the financial and emotional anxieties of a family man chasing a dream, avoiding the over-the-top, cheesy melodrama that often plagues Disney movies. Biggest Weakness The movie features a double-prologue that tracks Jim's childhood and early adulthood, which heavily drags down the first act and causes the main narrative to take a quite a while to finally get its feet under it.
