Storyline

In the 2007 historical action adventure The Last Legion, based on Valerio Massimo Manfredi's novel, the Western Roman Empire is collapsing in 476 AD. On the eve of 12-year-old Romulus Augustulus (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) being crowned Emperor, Goth chieftain Odoacer (Peter Mullan) invades Rome, slays the boy's parents, and imprisons Romulus alongside his wise tutor Ambrosinus (Ben Kingsley) on the island fortress of Capri. Aurelius (Colin Firth), commander of the Nova Invicta legion, survives the slaughter and sets out to rescue the boy, joined by a small band of loyal soldiers and Mira (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), a skilled warrior from the Byzantine Empire. On Capri, Romulus uncovers a legendary sword crafted for Julius Caesar bearing an enigmatic inscription. After breaking Romulus out, Aurelius and his allies travel across Europe to Britannia to seek refuge with the Ninth Legion—the last Roman legion still loyal to the empire. There, they must make a final stand against the ruthless warlord Vortigern (Kevin McKidd), setting the historical foundation for the Arthurian legend.

Biggest Strength The film presents an intriguing high-concept premise, cleverly bridging the fall of the Western Roman Empire with the origins of King Arthur's Arthurian mythos. Colin Firth brings solid heroic gravitas to his role as Aurelius, while Ben Kingsley lends fun, theatrical energy to his mentor role, keeping the adventure lighthearted and accessible. Biggest Weakness Despite a talented cast, the movie suffers from a low budget that makes its grand historical scale feel small, cheap, and TV-movie-esque. The action set pieces feature sluggish choreography and dated visual effects, while the dialogue relies heavily on clunky, predictable sword-and-sandal clichés that prevent the story from ever feeling truly epic or convincing.
