Step Up

In Anne Fletcher’s 2006 romantic dance drama Step Up, Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) is a rough-around-the-edges, streetwise youth living in a tough Baltimore neighborhood. After vandalizing the theater at the prestigious Maryland School of the Arts with his friends, Tyler is caught and sentenced to 200 hours of community service as a janitor at the school. While working his shifts, he catches the eye of Nora Clark (Jenna Dewan), a privileged, highly disciplined ballet student preparing for her senior showcase—a high-stakes performance that will determine her future as a professional dancer. When Nora’s dance partner sprains his ankle shortly before the showcase, Tyler offers to step in and help her practice. Though their background styles clash—Tyler’s raw, freestyle hip-hop versus Nora’s structured classical ballet—they gradually bridge the gap between their two worlds, fusing dance styles and developing a strong romantic connection. As personal tragedy strikes Tyler's street crew and Nora faces pressure from her family, both must commit to each other to deliver a career-defining final performance.
