In J.J. Abrams’ 2009 sci-fi action reboot Star Trek, the origin story of the iconic Starfleet crew is dramatically altered through an alternate timeline known as the "Kelvin Timeline." The story begins with the destruction of the USS Kelvin by Nero (Eric Bana), a vengeful Romulan commander who has traveled back in time from the future via a synthetic black hole created by exotic "red matter." Nero's destruction of the Kelvin kills George Kirk, leaving his newborn son, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), to grow up as a rebellious, reckless youth in Iowa. Encouraged by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), Kirk joins Starfleet Academy, where he frequently clashes with the logically driven, half-Vulcan cadet Spock (Zachary Quinto). When Nero attacks Vulcan to exact revenge on the Federation, Kirk, Spock, Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Bones (Karl Urban), Sulu (John Cho), Chekov (Anton Yelchin), and Scotty (Simon Pegg) board the newly commissioned USS Enterprise. To stop Nero's plan to destroy Earth, Kirk and Spock must overcome their personal rivalries and unite their contrasting operational styles to save Starfleet and assume their roles aboard the flagship.
