Storyline

In Jon Watts’ 2017 superhero coming-of-age film Spider-Man: Homecoming, fifteen-year-old Peter Parker (Tom Holland) navigates the daily pressures of high school at Midtown School of Science and Technology while eagerly awaiting his next big mission after his thrilling experience with the Avengers in Berlin. Under the watchful eye of his mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Stark's head of security Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Peter is told to stay grounded as a neighborhood street-level hero. Eager to prove himself worthy of becoming a full-fledged Avenger, Peter drops out of academic extracurriculars to fight local crime, eventually discovering that salvage contractor Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) has spent years building a illegal black-market weapons operation by modifying recovered alien Chitauri and tech debris using a mechanical suit as "The Vulture." When Peter’s best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) accidentally discovers his secret identity, Peter relies on Ned’s help to track Toomes’ arms ring. After a botched interception on the Staten Island Ferry forces Iron Man to step in and confiscate Peter's high-tech suit, Peter must rely on his own innate courage, intellect, and basic suit to stop Toomes from robbing a Stark cargo plane on the night of his high school homecoming dance.

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength Michael Keaton delivers a grounded, magnetically terrifying performance as Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, anchored by one of the best plot twists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe—the shocking revelation that Toomes is Liz's father when Peter arrives at her house for the homecoming dance. The tense, quiet car ride conversation that follows serves as a masterclass in suspense, showcasing how strong character dynamics elevate the superhero genre beyond standard CGI action. Biggest Weakness The story's heavy dependence on Tony Stark and Stark Industries technology takes away some of Peter Parker's traditional blue-collar, self-made hero roots. With a suit featuring an AI voice interface, automated target tracking, and hundreds of web-shooter combinations, Spider-Man often feels more like "Iron Man Jr." than an independent hero relying primarily on his own instincts and ingenuity.
