Storyline

In Bryan Singer’s 2013 fantasy adventure Jack the Giant Slayer, young farmhand Jack (Nicholas Hoult) accidentally reopens an ancient gateway between the human kingdom of Cloister and Gantua, a realm in the clouds inhabited by bloodthirsty giants. The trouble begins when Jack trades his horse for a handful of magic beans given to him by a desperate monk. That night, Princess Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson)—who has fled the castle to seek adventure—takes shelter in Jack’s cottage during a torrential storm. Water causes one of the beans to sprout, rapidly growing a colossal beanstalk that launches Jack’s house and Isabelle high into the sky. Determined to save the princess, King Brahmwell (Ian McShane) dispatches an elite rescue party led by the brave knight Elmont (Ewan McGregor), alongside Jack and the deceitful Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci), who secretly possesses a magical relic crown capable of controlling the giants. Once in Gantua, the party faces off against the two-headed giant leader Fallon (voiced by Bill Nighy), sparking an all-out war as the giants descend the stalk to invade the human world below.

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength The film boasts a charming and charismatic supporting cast that brings plenty of fun energy to the fairy tale landscape. Ewan McGregor’s swashbuckling heroics as Elmont and Stanley Tucci’s delightfully theatrical villainy as Lord Roderick keep the narrative moving smoothly, while the grand scale of the massive third-act battle around the castle walls delivers solid, high-stakes fantasy spectacle. Biggest Weakness The CGI visual effects used to render the giants feel oddly inconsistent and dated, often slipping into "uncanny valley" territory that robs the creatures of real physical weight and threat. Additionally, the film struggles with a tone that fluctuates awkwardly between lighthearted children's fairy tale whimsy and surprisingly gross, violent fantasy action.
