Storyline
Set twenty years after the original 1996 invasion, Independence Day: Resurgence (2016) explores a world that has utilized reverse-engineered alien technology to build a global defense system known as the Earth Space Defense (ESD). However, the peace is shattered when the aliens return with a massive "harvester" mothership, 3,000 miles in diameter, which uses its own gravitational pull to level entire cities and begins drilling into the Earth's core. While legacy characters like David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and former President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) return to guide a new generation of pilots, including Jake Morrison (Liam Hemsworth) and Dylan Hiller (Jessie T. Usher), humanity must find a way to destroy the alien Queen before the planet’s magnetic field is permanently extinguished.

Editor's Note
Biggest Strength The film features impressive large-scale visual effects and imaginative "what-if" world-building that showcases how human society might advanced by integrating extraterrestrial technology. Biggest Weakness It suffers from a hollow, derivative script and a "Will Smith-sized hole" in the cast, trading the original's character-driven charm for soul-less CGI spectacle.
Veluminous Quality Rating: 4/10
