Storyline
Set ten years after a global "Simian Flu" pandemic has decimated human civilization, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) focuses on the fragile peace between a growing nation of genetically evolved apes, led by Caesar, and a small group of human survivors in San Francisco. When the humans venture into ape territory to restore a hydroelectric dam, a tenuous alliance forms between Caesar and the human leader, Malcolm. However, internal betrayal from Caesar’s lieutenant, Koba—who harbors a deep-seated hatred for humanity—ignites a violent coup that pushes both species to the brink of an all-out war. As the city becomes a battlefield, Caesar must fight to reclaim his leadership and decide if co-existence is even possible in a world defined by fear and vengeance.

Editor's Note
Biggest Strength The film’s motion-capture technology and Andy Serkis's nuanced performance create an incredibly high level of emotional depth, making the apes feel like fully realized, empathetic characters. Biggest Weakness While the ape-centric storytelling is masterful, the human supporting characters are comparatively underdeveloped and struggle to match the gravitas of the conflict happening on the other side.
Veluminous Quality Rating: 8.5/10
