Where to Watch the Left Behind Movies

The first Left Behind movie came out in 2000 and rapidly turned the highly-successful book series into a popular movie franchise that developed a dedicated cult following, spurring 4 sequels (including 2 reboots) and even a set of video games. For people watching these movies for the first time, Kirk Cameron’s charming personality, paired with the bizarre imagery and dystopian setting for the films resulted in a mixture that resulted in a very unique and new style of post apocalyptic films.

For all of you who are current or future fans of the Left Behind franchise, this is your guide on where you can watch these films legally and completely free online TODAY! So grab your popcorn, and let’s get started!

Left Behind: The Movie Banner Image

The first movie to start off this franchise released in theaters on February 2, 2001, and it was instantly unlike anything audiences had ever seen before. To explain the instant success of these films, it is important to realize what faith-based audiences were used to up to this point. The big budget blockbusters of the past (think Ben Hur or The Ten Commandments) were long gone and a thing of the past. For anyone who wanted to find film and entertainment that reflected their Christian faith, there were very few options, and the options that did exist were often low-budget, unenjoyable, and difficult to sit through. When audiences, Christian and non-Christian alike, sat down to watch Left Behind, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that this was a movie that was filled with action, good acting, and an enjoyable storyline - at least in comparison to what they were used to.

Similarly to the books, the movie follows the events outlined in the Book of Revelation, depicting endtime prophecy launching with the rapture, during which millions of people suddenly vanish and go missing from the face of the planet. The world rapidly descends into chaos, and a new figurehead known as Nicolae Carpathia rises to power, offering order and peace in this new void. For those who are left behind (hence the franchise name), they have to grapple with this new reality and decide what they believe about what just happened. Was it an alien abduction? Or did God actually rapture his church? And if so, the uncomfortable truth is that they are stuck on earth, about to endure through one of the most difficult periods of human history. Yet through all of this, a remnant of individuals band together, some of whom were already passive Christians in the past, to renew their walk with Christ and endure to the end.

For those of you who have not seen this film yet, there are numerous memorable moments. For me personally, I find one of the ending scenes to be the most compelling in the franchise. In this scene, there is a showdown between Carpathia and numerous world leaders. As the former is still rising in power, the world leaders challenge his growing authority, and he results to a very dramatic humbling of them, revealing that any who are not walking with Christ are powerless against the growing antichrist. Left Behind II: Tribulation Force Banner Image

Kirk Cameron returned in 2002 to reprise his role as the memorable Buck Williams for Left Behind II: Tribulation Force. Now that Buck, Rayford, and Chloe have all converted to Christianity, they form an underground organization called the Tribulation Force. The goal? To continue to spread the gospel despite increasing persecution and tightening of religious freedoms as the Antichrist (Nicolae Carpathia) continues to climb in power.

Each character experiences their own personal development as they navigate through the struggles of this movie. Buck explores the appearance of two mysterious men in Jerusalem - the prophesied Two Witnesses. At the same time, his relationship with Chloe Steele is continuing to grow, despite Chloe struggling with some relationship drama and battling with some jealousy over one of Buck’s former female work colleagues. And Rayford ends up in one of the riskiest positions of the bunch - he takes a job as a pilot for the Antichrist - appearing to help him, but really using his close position to him as an opportunity to be aware of his every move and his actions.

All in all, this movie is (in my opinion) significantly less interesting than the first one in the series, but it is still solid enough in its character development and major story points to still be worth the watch. It does feel rather slow in parts and almost like a filler movie between the first title and the third title, and lacks a major, iconic moment like the first movie had (the UN confrontation scene with Carpathia). That leaves me as the viewer almost forgetting the movie and its plot points, although there is a cool moment when the Two Witnesses exhale fire onto soldiers trying to stop Buck Williams from contacting the former.

Left Behind 3: World at War Wide Banner

Left Behind: World at War is the final title in the 3-movie trilogy featuring Kirk Cameron and canonically continuing the same story across all three movies (after this, there are multiple Left Behind reboots featuring different casts of actors). This title increases the pace from the second title, feeling much more like a fast-paced thriller movie than the second and even the first movies, with the stakes drastically raised as the world begins to descend into chaos and intercontinental warfare.

After an assassination attempt on the President of the United States, the President becomes aware of Nicolae’s identity as the Antichrist and confronts him. The ensuing conflict nearly takes his life as he realizes he cannot defeat him in his human power. This realization causes him to convert to Christianity.

At the same time, the Global Community begins to infect Bibles with a dangerous virus, infecting Christians globally. Chloe, who was just recently married to Buck Williams, becomes fatally sick with the bacteria, and they have to search for a cure together.

All in all, this film is a fun watch. Even though it is not as iconic as the first installment in the series, it feels a lot slicker like a modern thriller movie, complete with fight scenes, a stunning showdown between the President and Nicolae Carpathia, and rising stakes that keep you emotionally involved throughout. However, it does leave on a compelling cliffhanger that leaves one thinking there was originally meant to be another sequel in the franchise — a sequel that never happened. So you could find yourself somewhat unsatisfied after reaching the end of this movie, considering a full resolution was apparently left to a sequel that never happened.

Left Behind 2014 Movie Banner Image

With the 2014 reboot featuring Nicholas Cage, the Left Behind franchise took a major hit. Prior to this title, the films were at least debatably solid movies - fans would argue they were some of the best Christian films to date, haters would argue they were cringey Christian spectacle. But with this next title and the next generation reboot, there was no debate. It was authoritatively agreed upon that this was a painful, unenjoyable film. The Rotten Tomato ratings bear this out - as of 2026, the critic ratings for this film weigh in at a spectacular 0% — an accomplishment very few films have been able to accomplish. Audience ratings don’t fare much better — only around 20%.

The film is painful to watch almost from the very beginning. Within minutes, we have a scene of a woman confronting a man in the airport, preaching at him in a very awkward manner. We also later see Chloe’s mother confronting her regarding the gospel. The main characters themselves are rather forgettable and have virtually none of the charm found in Kirk Cameron and Janaya Stephens. Nicholas Cage may actually be one of the few tolerable elements of this film. If you are a Nick Cage fan, you may enjoy moments of this film, but that’s about it. Rayford Steele (played by Cage) spends almost the entire film holed up inside of the cockpit of the aircraft. It’s one of those films where you pretty much watch one character from one location throughout an entire 90-120 minute film. And in that case, that effect was NOT done well.

With this modern reboot, they had more tools to depict the disaster of the rapture with more spectacle and grandeur. And unfortunately, they chose the route of embracing chaos at the expense of meaningful character development. They actually had the budget to depict planes crashing, cars wrecking, and other disasters, but the spectacle in no way made up for the two-dimensional, unlikable characters.

All in all, if you are doing a movie marathon watching through this franchise, you won’t DIE by watching this… but you may find yourself wishing the rapture would happen in the middle of it so that you don’t have to finish it.

Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist Wide Banner

Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist is the final Left Behind movie, debuting as yet ANOTHER reboot in early 2023, and featuring well-established Christian filmmaker / actor Kevin Sorbo as Rayford Steele. This latest title actually plants us right in the MIDDLE of the Left Behind storyline, about six months after the rapture (so this movie does not have a drawn-out depiction of the rapture happening).

The focus of the movie largely centers on Buck Williams (who is STILL not as charming as Kirk Cameron in this title) as he continues to do undercover journalism digging into the presence of the elusive, mysterious Jonathan Stonagal. Meanwhile, Rayford Steele comes into contact with left behind pastor Bruce Barnes as they struggle through their faith in this new world together.

Although this film is a significant improvement over the 2014 Left Behind reboot, it still struggles from a generally unmemorable storyline, especially since it skirts past the usual depiction of the rapture - one of the main memorable moments of the franchise. Because of this, looking back, without thinking deeply, I can personally barely remember any important moments or scenes throughout the film. It also struggles from an awkward touch of political undertones as the movie loosely addresses elements of the Covid-19 pandemic. I remember watching it and feeling rather disappointed, as I really think movies take damage from trying too hard to integrate present-day political movements or ideologies into their storyline.

So, is it better than the 2014 reboot? In many regards, yes. But to this day, this and no other title has been able to hold a candle up to the iconic storytelling and characters of the original 2000 Left Behind movie.
