Storyline

In Jeff Nichols’ 2012 coming-of-age drama Mud (released wide in 2013), fourteen-year-old Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and his best friend Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) discover an abandoned boat lodged high in a tree on a remote island along the Mississippi River in Arkansas. They soon realize the boat is occupied by Mud (Matthew McConaughey), a enigmatic, superstitious fugitive hiding out from law enforcement and ruthless bounty hunters. Mud reveals he killed a man in Texas to protect his lifelong love, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon), and is waiting on the island to reunite with her and escape together. Intrigued by Mud's fierce romanticism and seeking escape from his own parents' impending divorce, Ellis agrees to help Mud by delivering messages to Juniper and gathering supplies to restore the boat's engine. As bounty hunters hired by the victim's wealthy father close in on the town, Ellis's idealist perception of love and loyalty is tested, forcing him to navigate the harsh realities of adulthood, trust, and heartbreak.
