Storyline

In Rob Minkoff’s 2008 martial arts fantasy adventure The Forbidden Kingdom, South Boston teenager Jason Tripitikas (Michael Angarano) is an obsessed fan of kung fu cinema who regularly frequents an antique shop in Chinatown run by the elderly Hop (Jackie Chan). During a robbery attempt by a local street gang, Hop is shot, but hands Jason a legendary golden staff, instructing him to return it to its rightful owner. Fleeing the gang, Jason falls off a roof and is magically transported back in time to ancient China. Waking up in a remote village, Jason learns the staff belongs to the immortal Monkey King (Jet Li), who was imprisoned in stone five hundred years prior by the tyrannical Jade Warlord (Collin Chou). Joined by Lu Yan (Jackie Chan), a wandering drunken immortal, Silent Monk (Jet Li), a devoted warrior monk, and Golden Sparrow (Liu Yifei), an orphan seeking revenge against the Warlord, Jason receives rigorous martial arts training from both masters. Together, the group embarks on a dangerous quest across ancient landscapes to reach Five Elements Mountain, battle the Warlord's forces and the deadly witch Ni-Chang (Li Bingbing), and free the Monkey King to restore peace to the realm.

Biggest Strength The historic, long-awaited onscreen pairing of martial arts icons Jackie Chan and Jet Li delivers incredible fan fulfillment. Legendary fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping crafts brilliant martial arts duels between the two masters—most notably their extended temple sparring match—allowing Chan's fluid, drunken boxing style to clash magnificently with Li's sharp, precise acrobatics. Biggest Weakness The story uses a generic, fish-out-of-water American teenager as the primary audience surrogate, which frequently dilutes the authentic wuxia mythology with cliché coming-of-age tropes. Michael Angarano's character feels largely superfluous alongside the legendary martial arts cast, pulling focus away from the richer ancient fantasy world.
