In the 2013 animated comedy sequel Despicable Me 2, former supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) has fully retired from his life of cosmic crime to focus on being a legitimate businessman and a devoted adoptive father to Margo, Edith, and Agnes. His quiet routine of manufacturing jelly and organizing backyard birthday parties is upended when he is forcefully recruited by the Anti-Villain League (AVL)—a highly secretive global organization dedicated to fighting crime. Partnered with the eccentric, hyperactive AVL agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig), Gru is sent undercover at a local shopping mall to identify a mysterious criminal who has stolen a highly volatile chemical serum capable of mutating harmless creatures into ravenous monsters. While balancing awkward blind dates and the protective instincts of a father watching Margo fall for a boy, Gru suspects that the mall's flamboyant restaurant owner, Eduardo Perez (Benjamin Bratt), is secretly El Macho—a legendary villain long presumed dead. As Gru races to uncover the truth, his yellow Minions begin mysteriously disappearing from his home, setting the stage for a mutated, high-stakes showdown.
