Storyline
Based on the 1992 book We Were Soldiers Once… and Young, this 2002 war drama depicts the Battle of Ia Drang, the first major engagement between the United States Army and the People's Army of Vietnam in 1965. Mel Gibson stars as Lt. Col. Hal Moore, who leads 400 soldiers of the 7th Cavalry into a remote valley known as the "Valley of Death," only to find themselves surrounded by roughly 4,000 North Vietnamese troops. The film splits its narrative between the brutal, visceral combat on the ground and the emotional toll on the families back at Fort Benning, specifically focusing on Moore’s wife, Julia, as she takes on the grim task of delivering telegrams to the new widows of the fallen.

Editor's Note
Biggest Strength The film is widely praised for its unflinching, technically accurate portrayal of mid-1960s infantry tactics and the intense, chaotic reality of jungle warfare. Biggest Weakness The heavy-handed use of slow-motion and a sweeping, sentimental musical score occasionally pushes the movie toward "heroic melodrama," which can undermine the raw, gritty realism established in the battle scenes.
