Where to Watch The Star Free

Storyline

In Timothy Reckart’s 2017 animated computer-fantasy comedy The Star, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Affirm Films, the traditional nativity story is reimagined through the eyes of the animals. Bo (voiced by Steven Yeun) is a small, ambitious mill donkey in Nazareth who longs to escape his mundane daily routine grinding grain to join the royal caravan. With the help of his eccentric dove friend Dave (Keegan-Michael Key), Bo breaks free and injures his ankle, taking refuge with the newly married Mary (Gina Rodriguez) and Joseph (Zachary Levi). When King Herod (Christopher Plummer) learns of the impending birth of the "King of Kings," he dispatches a ruthless royal hunter and his two menacing attack dogs to eliminate the unborn child. Discovering the plot, Bo, Dave, and an adventurous sheep named Ruth (Aidy Bryant)—who left her flock to follow a bright new star in the sky—embark on a perilous journey across Judea to protect Mary and Joseph. Joined by three wisecracking wise men camels (Tracy Morgan, Tyler Perry, and Oprah Winfrey), Bo and his animal friends work together to evade Herod’s hunter and ensure the safe birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength The film offers an accessible, family-friendly retelling of the nativity story that successfully balances lighthearted animated slapstick with genuine reverent heart. Backed by a strong ensemble voice cast and a bright, modern soundtrack—featuring an Golden Globe-nominated original title song by Mariah Carey—it provides a fresh, child-focused perspective on classic biblical events without altering the core narrative. Biggest Weakness The animation quality and character models feel noticeably mid-tier compared to flagship Sony or Pixar productions, occasionally resembling direct-to-video computational standards. Additionally, the heavy reliance on modern pop-culture dialogue, animal slapstick, and comedic banter can sometimes clash awkwardly with the sacred, historical tone of the Nativity.
