Storyline
The 1984 classic The Karate Kid follows Daniel LaRusso, a teenager who moves from New Jersey to Southern California and quickly becomes the target of a group of bullies from the Cobra Kai dojo. After being saved from a brutal beating by his apartment’s unassuming handyman, Mr. Miyagi, Daniel discovers that his savior is actually a martial arts master. Miyagi agrees to train Daniel through unconventional methods—famously using mundane chores like waxing cars and painting fences—to prepare him for the All-Valley Karate Tournament. The film culminates in a high-stakes showdown where Daniel must overcome physical injury and his own fears to prove his worth and earn the respect of his peers.

Editor's Note
Biggest Strength The relationship between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi is the emotional heartbeat of the film. It transcends the typical "mentor-student" trope, offering a deeply moving exploration of friendship, grief, and fatherhood. Biggest Weakness The pacing in the second act can feel a bit slow for modern audiences. Before the tournament ramp-up, the film spends a significant amount of time on the repetitive nature of Daniel’s training and the high school romance subplots.
