The Great Wall

In the 2016 historical fantasy action spectacle The Great Wall, the true purpose behind one of the world's greatest architectural wonders is revealed to be a defensive shield against a terrifying supernatural threat. William Garin (Matt Damon) and Pero Tovar (Pedro Pascal) are battle-hardened European mercenaries traveling through Song Dynasty China in search of the legendary "black powder" weapon. After surviving an attack by an unseen beast, they are captured at the Great Wall by the Nameless Order—a highly disciplined, elite imperial military force led by General Shao and Commander Lin Mae (Jing Tian). William quickly learns that the Wall wasn't built to keep out human invaders, but rather the Tao Tei: a ravenous, hive-minded swarm of ancient alien monsters that awaken every 60 years to devour humanity. Impressed by William’s incredible archery skills, the Order integrates the foreigners into their ranks just as the swarm launches a massive, coordinated assault, forcing the mercenaries to choose between stealing the gunpowder and fleeing, or standing ground to save civilization.
