Storyline

In Jon Watts’ 2019 superhero adventure Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is grieving the loss of his mentor Tony Stark while navigating high school life following the events of Avengers: Endgame. Desperate for a break from superhero duties, Peter joins his classmates on a summer school trip across Europe, planning to confess his romantic feelings to MJ (Zendaya). However, his vacation is hijacked when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) recruits him to fight elemental creatures destroying cities across the continent. Fury introduces Peter to Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a mysterious armored hero dubbed "Mysterio," who claims to be from an alternate dimension destroyed by the Elementals. Overwhelmed by the pressure to step up as the next Iron Man, Peter entrusts Beck with "E.D.I.T.H.," an advanced tactical AI system left behind by Stark. Shortly after, Peter discovers Beck is actually a disgruntled former Stark Industries holographic scientist leading a team of ex-employees who engineered the Elementals using weaponized drones to fake heroic acts. Realizing his mistake, Peter must synthesize a new Spider-Man suit and utilize his heightened "spider-sense" to dismantle Mysterio’s intricate illusions before Beck unleashes a catastrophic attack on London.

Editor's Note

Biggest Strength Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a fantastic, charismatic performance as Mysterio, unlocking incredible visual set pieces powered by Marvel’s illusion-tech sequences. The surreal sequence where Mysterio traps Spider-Man inside a psychological gauntlet of holographic nightmare scenarios—including a zombie Iron Man and shifting physical landscapes—stands as one of the most inventive and visually striking sequences in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Biggest Weakness The narrative leans very heavily on Tony Stark’s legacy and technology, making Peter Parker’s arc feel somewhat derivative of Iron Man rather than letting Spider-Man fully step out into his own independent hero identity. Additionally, the decision to once again frame the primary villain's motivation around personal grievances with Tony Stark feels overly familiar within the MCU framework.
